KANNADA

An inspiring autobiography

BICHHIDA JOLIGE — An Autobiography: S. J. Nagalotimath; Athree Book Centre, 4, Sharavathi Building, Balmatta, Mangalore-575001. Rs. 75.

IN THIS very interesting autobiography, Nagalotimath gives an account of the battles he had to wage to come up in his profession, friends who helped him and a few who tried to suppress him. It is not however a mere story of men and events that mattered much in his career. The author has given valuable advice to medical students in pursuing their chosen subject.

He became a pre-eminent pathologist. His efforts to build a model pathology museum in Belgaum have won universal acclaim. The museum has become a national institution and a role model, again winning global acceptance. He bagged the Dr. B. C. Roy medal (1999) a coveted award given to a medical professional.

But for the chastisement of his father Nagalotimath might well have chosen wrestling for a career. If the decision had stood, the medical profession would have lost a multi-faceted all rounder. Tenacity is a quality that has stood him in good stead. Of course in one or two instances it has cost him dear.

He was unafraid to point out a crucial mistake in a book written by an authority on pathology and risked his chances of passing the degree exams. But when the writer was shown proper evidence he sportingly admitted and made amends in his next essay. A highly religious man, he brought about amity between two Veerasaiva scholars and helped build a temple in the college campus. The author has narrated a few incidents that had gone awry at international conferences. There are only a few books on medical doctors and this one is unique.
