Skits on socio-political issues
P. V. L. N. Rao
COUNTERVIEW: Kalluri Bhaskaram; 2-2-1149/1, Flat S5, Tirumal Enclave, Hyderabad-44. Rs. 90.
THIS BOOK is a compilation of 33 skits, which first appeared in Andhra Prabha under the column counterview (1996-99). With insights gained as editor of Bhakti and translator of P.V.'s Insider, the author analyses socio-political issues with a novel transcreative technique. The pun-packed titles attract instant attention.
The author's thesis in "Salaam Sonia" is unconventional. Despite her initial ignorance of India, Sonia soon became an expert in appraisal of men and matters.
In "Talakindula (inverted) swamyam", the author proclaims that democracy means many things to many people votes to a politician, currency to voters, ministership to an MLA and scuffles to elected representatives in assemblies.
In "Pradhama Pourohityam"(first priesthood), the first citizen wants his speechwriter to prepare a memorable address for the ensuing National Festival Day. For four years, the speeches are hackneyed with repetitive themes like technological advancement, poverty eradication and gender empowerment.
The speechwriter sighs, "Novelty is impossible in this ambience of intellectual vacuity."
This volume is interesting and instructive.
