THIS BOOK is the continuation of the story narrated by the author in his famous novel `Hejje' (Footstep) in which the socio-political situation during the pre-Independence period is depicted. The title of the book (Footprint) is apt for it rightly indicates the continuity.
At the centre of the story is Savithri, a teacher turned social worker who had lost her husband in the Quit India Movement. Savithri's parents and her husband were migrants to Mumbai.
The deceased husband was a popular trade union leader. With this background Savithri intends to enter active politics despite a lot of domestic and financial hurdles.
As she was the widow of a martyr in the cause of freedom, his supporters persuaded her to enter active politics.
The author, with his high ideals gives the political situation of Bombay prevailing during Nehru's time.
The problems of slum-dwellers, clashes, feelings, striking incidents of urbanites, solidarity with the minorities, and the situation in the camp of Pakistan immigrants are discussed in detail. There is advocacy of Gandhiji's ideals in the light of the first elections in a democracy and manifestation of political parties. Malayalam
