Battling cancer

P. SUNDARESAN

VAAZHKKAI ORU KONDAATTAM: Rani Maindan's Tamil version of R.M.Lala's monograph in English; Kalaignan Pathippagam, 19, Kannadhasan Salai, T. Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs. 100.

RUSSI M. LALA is living proof that it is possible to beat cancer. Undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma from 1989 onwards, he managed to write quite a few books of lasting significance thanks to the cooperation of his better half.

Among them is the epistolary monograph `Celebration of the Cells' which contains a cornucopia of information on the malignant cells that stem from tumor.

The epistles are meant not only to cheer up a fellow woman patient afflicted with Hodgkin's lymphoma but also make one develop the will to live.

To put the salient features in a nutshell: Cancer is indeed preventable. But once affected, it can be controlled; symptoms of cancer; different kinds of the disease affecting different parts of the body; various forms of therapy such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment have been used with different degrees of success; a nutritional approach to the prevention and control of cancer; the relevance of moral re-armament and Alcoholics Anonymous; Lala's metamorphosis from atheism to theism; the sovereign remedy through Yoga and meditation.

The poems in this profound book shine with as much lustre in translation.
