MALAYALAM

The female psyche

K. KUNHIKRISHNAN

Manassariyathe: (Novel) Devi Olive Publications Pvt. Ltd, Kozhikode 673 011 Rs. 80.

WHAT HAPPENS when a girl child does not get parental love and care? She turns rebellious and socially aberrant. Manasi, the main character of this novel, loses her uncaring parents in childhood and is brought up by her father's brother. She is pampered and becomes worse than a rebel. Hers is a case for social research. Manasi chose her husband, a busy businessman almost double her age, and he is very considerate to her. Though her uncle, a retired colonel, is a very strict disciplinarian, he is always ready to forgive the mistakes of his niece and support her. In her urge to beget love, Manasi commits a series of mistakes and covers them up, which ultimately results in her husband's death, but she finds another man.

The narration revolves round her innocence but that has not convincingly been conveyed to the reader. It is difficult to empathise with Manasi's quest for true love and to that extent the novel does not make a very good literary work.
