SAROJINI PREMCHAND
Sri Jagadguru Dvayam: Sringeri Bharati - Kanchi Saraswathi; by: Visakha; Published by: Saadhana Grandha Mandali,Tenali. Rs. 80.
A BOOK that would surely delight the devotees of Chandrasekhara Bharati (1892-1954) and Chandrasekharendra Saraswati (1894-1994). In two separate sections, the life of each preceptor is described along with brief sketches of Sringeri and Kanchi and their religious significance.
Bharati Swami, the head of the more ancient Sringeri with his profound scholarship in Vedanta and Tarkashastra, bestowed his kindly guidance to seekers and preferred a life of solitude and meditation. In an interesting incident mentioned in this book, he told a Frenchman that there is no need to change either his religion or to move away from his country in order to pursue the spiritual path. Discussions with disciples in this compilation will benefit some serious readers.
Swaminathan was a brilliant student in school when chosen as the 68th pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti peetam in 1907. From that day he led an ascetic life of a high order. Travelling throughout the country on foot during 1919-39 he propagated Hindu Dharma. Thousands of people attended his discourses. In Midnapore students agitating for freedom of the country, who were in jail, took permission from the authorities and sought his blessings. Episodes such as Paul Brunton and the queen of Spain meeting with Chandrasekharendra Saraswati are absorbingly told. However, there is a slackening of pace in the narration towards the end of the book.
