THE TIRUKKURAL is the foremost among the Tamil classics to attract global readers as understood through its innumerable translations not only in Indian but also in foreign languages. Because of its human concern and universal appeal, it commanded veneration from all sections of people, professing different faiths. Its author Tiruvalluvar with his erudition, rich experience and keen observation contemplated, analysed and organised the ethical codes, social values, political thoughts and worldly wisdom under specific heads, each of which possessing 10 couplets. He accommodated all of them under three major divisions: Aram - virtuous life, Porul - wealth and polity, and Imbam - the joy of conjugal life.

The present book is prepared with a purpose and ideal. It consists of two parts. In the first part, the author has written some articles highlighting the secular feature of Tirukkural. Also he has dealt with some social and ethical aspects with a stress on Christianity and Marxism. In the second part he has really made an adventure by introducing fresh names for the textual chapters with their realignment without disturbing the existing order of the last division, Inbathupaal. A lucid commentary is also provided. Though the traditional scholars may disagree with the dislocation and distortion of the structure of the original text, none would disapprove his boldness in presenting his views.
