THE ORIGINAL Marathi version of the present book is a Sahitya Akademi award-winning work written by Bhalachandra Nemade, a noted critic who gave an impetus to Marathi literary criticism when it was staggering under the influence of western intellectual attitude. Twenty-seven literary genres in Marathi literature are arranged in four parts apart from three interviews, which the critic had with famous writers. These articles brought about a remarkable change in the outlook of Marathi critics when they were first published.
Discussing elaborately about the influence of English on Marathi writing, the author points out some advantages in the development of Marathi language and literature such as extensive growth of vocabulary, global contact and interaction, structural expansion, though there were some adverse changes like the loss of original style and expression. There are scholarly discussions on topics like nativity in literature, English writing of Indians, Marathi literature and modernity, Marathi novel and its cultural integration, Mahanubhava cult, Warkari movement, Abhanga literature and other related topics. The translation is good.
