MALAYALAM
On meditation
C. L. RAMAKRISHNAN
DHYANANGAL: Translation in Malayalam by V.T. Jayadevan of excerpts from lectures of J. Krishnamurti: DC Books, DC Kizhekemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 80.
THIS SLEEK edition is a translation of excerpts from selected speeches of J. Krishnamurti (J.K.), relating to meditation. Though J.K. had not centered on any particular aspect in his speeches, the followers of his philosophy, would know that his presentations were meditation-centric.
This publication brings out the essentials of meditation such as mode, situational requirements, and not to think of the past, present or future. Silence is the ultimate result of purposeful meditation, which is reminiscent of the word `Mauna', used in the 10th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, where the Lord describes Himself as `Mauna' among secrets, hinting at Brahman realisation.
According to J.K., meditation is not a means to liberation, but an end in itself. One could recall the state of `Nirvikalpaka Samadhi' or `Asamprajnata Samadhi'. In effect, the person who is meditating, the medium (meditation) and the result of meditation (realisation) are all telescoped into one. Many sentences in this publication are like aphorisms and unless one gets initiated into and dwells upon J.K.'s philosophy, it is difficult to catch their import. The final position is: meditation is a journey from known to nothingness, where no thought exists.
The translator should be complimented for bringing out a very faithful and clear exposition of the terse statements of J.K., though at places, need reading and re-reading, due to the subtleties embedded in them.
