TELUGU

The Ayodhya imbroglio

B. S. R. KRISHNA

AYODHYA, 6 DECEMBER 1992: P.V. Narasimha Rao; Raavela Sambasiva Rao — Tr. in Telugu; Alakananda Prachuranalu; Opp. Maris Stella College, Vijayawada-520008. Rs. 175.

THIS BOOK, written by former Prime Minister of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao , gives an authentic account of the so called "Rama Janma Bhoomi-Babari Masjid" story, in brief, the story of Ayodhya.

Beginning with 1528 A.D., he gives the chronological developments. As a scholar-politician he has tried to be as objective as possible in describing how the various political parties were trying to exploit the highly sensitive issue to enhance their respective vote banks.

In this, he does not spare even his own political party, when he talks of the mindset of the party, which wanted to share or even monopolise the advantage of any winning situation and find scapegoats for failures.

Rao's work, with minute details, can form a very informative chapter in the history of modern India.

Sambasiva Rao's Telugu rendering is readable and true to the original, except that the translator has wrongly spelt Rao's surname as Paamulapaati for Paamulaparthi. The book is a boon to future historians.
