Documenting human history

AMBIKA ANANTH

PRAPANCHA PRAJALA CHARITHRA: Translated by Safdar Ahmed. Prajasakti Book House, 1-1-187/1/2, Chikkadpally, Hyderabad-20. Rs. 175.

THIS BOOK, a translation of Chris Hurman's work, presents the history of people right from the ancient times to modern times and talks about industrial revolution, about how aristocracy found itself overthrown by bourgeois revolution, class conflicts, and so on. Readers will be fascinated and disenchanted as well, with the reality of our historicity.

This work reads as an overall evaluation and documentation of social, political, cultural revolutions and movements — it does not speak of kings or kingdoms, nor does it merely chronicle events; it reviews the progression of human history.

The painstaking diligence required for producing a work such as this is evident right through. The author has not confined himself to the western world and has given due importance to the history of the people of Asia, Africa and Latin America too — thus making his work comprehensive.

Translating a work of this kind is not an easy task, but the translator has done a deft and commendable work.
