Anthology of stories

K. KUNHIKRISHNAN

CV BALAKRISHNANTE KATHAKAL — 1975-2005: CV Balakrishnan, Current Books, Thrissur-680001.

Distributed by Cosmo Books.

Rs. 210.

THREE DECADES are a long time span for a writer to evolve and to transform his style and idiom. The 94 stories in this volume show a writer, who over the period, has refreshingly matured, improving upon his style, nuances, and imageries without any affectation. The narrative craft is simple and direct and touches upon the sensitivities of the reader. The plots and themes are handled movingly with clarity and appeal to the sensibilities of love, and compassion. Portrayal of imageries, characters, and commonplace events are evocative and the writer is at his best in dealing with the situations and themes of the northernmost part of the State.

The selection is representative of the transformation of the writer: all through he is committed to humanitarian concerns with aesthetic appeal. Notable is the way in which nature with its splendours and variety has been brought in to set the tone for the story.
