BOOKS IN Indian languages do not normally get any international recognition as they are inaccessible to the English-knowing readers. This book is no exception. Perhaps Rabindranath Tagore would not have won the Nobel Prize, had he not translated Geetanjali into English!
This book has all the 53 short stories of the author, N. Mohanan, and all of them deal with rural life in Kerala. He takes us through the enchanting back waters, beautiful paddy fields and the lush greenery of rural Kerala.
In the story "Thiruvananthapuram", the young hero is from a village, and he, loses his confidence, and thus his future, after a series of events. So he ceases to live and begins to just exist. His memories become his only companion. This youngster is the product of the changing times and he is not alone. Like this, every story has a touch of melancholy. Tolerance, the byproduct of pure love, is the watchword of many of Mohanan's characters.
Living up to the name and fame of his mother Lalithambika Antharjanam, a well-known writer, was quite a task. And of course, eventually he came through with flying colours.
