AMBIKA ANANTH

GHOSHA — Anthology of Short Stories: Kasibhatla Venugopal; Pub. by Vahini Book Trust, 1-9-286/3,Vidya Nagar, Hyderabad-500044. Rs. 50.

ONE SEES a full gamut of emotions of life situations, which are beyond mundane realities in the stories of Kasibhatla Venugopal. He presents his themes with creative dexterity and aesthetic sensibility. The macabre side of society he shows in the story "Brinda" so remarkably, one understands how important it is to make ours an inclusive society when it comes to accepting mental illness and slow learning. The dolorous conditions a mother faces in bringing up her mentally challenged adolescent daughter Brinda, how malevolent people can get when a woman is single and attractive — these elemental factors in the story are so powerfully depicted, it overwhelms the reader. The author takes the emotions to a crescendo and finally ends on a soothing note, making this story the cornerstone of the collection.

Though all the stories are highly compelling, stories like "Masi Tudichina Manavatwam", "Oka Paata Maranam", "Maanigam" deserve special mention.
