TELUGU

Amusing stories

SAROJINI PREMCHAND

AMERIKAAMEDY KADHALU: Vanguri Chitten Raju; Vahini Book Trust, 1-9-286/3, Vidyanagar, Hyderabad- 500044. Rs. 100.

A NOVEL and an amusing introduction by Bapu and Ramana in free verse gives the reader a foretaste of the inside material.

The author tries to portray the life of Telugu- speaking people in America with large doses of humour. The heartache of alienation from one’s language and culture underneath these stories is quite discernible to a keen reader.

Playing host to jobless friends and descending visitors from India throws the already hurry-scurry life of these families into utter chaos. While the adult generation tries to cling on to their roots, the young are too eager to cast off their identity to the horror of parents and grandparents.

On the whole life there seems to be never dull, a medley of excitements and exasperations.

A few of the 24 pieces of writing in this volume can be ranked as short stories; among the rest some are plain sketches of colourful characters and funny situations.
