TELUGU

Devotional work

AMBIKA ANANTH

BHRAMARA GEETAMU: Chalasani Vasumathi; copies can be had from author, 60-8-2, 5th Lane, Siddhartha Nagar,Vijayawada-520010. Rs. 85.

THIS WORK by the saint-poet Surdas belongs to our ancient cultural heritage. These songs were composed in the Braj Bhasha dialect, which is regarded as Krishna’s own language. This book is its lucid translation into Telugu, which reads as a poetic prose work. It reflects the translator’s command over the source and target languages.

Every chapter reflects the devotional stirrings of Surdas who was blind, yet he saw Lord Krishna in His omnipotent form. The greatness of Gopis who were embodiments of spiritual passion can be understood through this work. Lord Krishna aware of the growing pride in Uddhava sent him to the Gopis on the pretext of teaching them ‘Nirguna upasana’ (formless devotion). Suffering pangs of separation from their beloved Lord, the Gopis rejected Uddhava’s preaching outright. They resorted to a very sarcastic repartee in an indirect way addressing a honeybee, but in reality was aimed at Uddhava. Thus the title ‘Bhramara Geeta’. They proclaimed that their love for Krishna was so deep that anything said on ‘Hatha yoga’ and ‘Nirguna upasana’ was futile talk and that they considered their devotion to Krishna much greater than any ‘Yoga’.

The author has succeeded commendably in this creative enterprise. A must read book.
