About men and matters

B. R. P. BHASKAR

M.P.VEERENDRAKUMARINTE KRITIKAL — Vols. 1 and 2: M.P.Veerendrakumar, Mathrubhumi Books, Kozhikode-673001. Rs. 865 (two volumes).

M. P. VEERENDRAKUMAR IS a man of many parts. Amidst his preoccupations as the head of a major newspaper group, state president of a national political party, and a Member of Parliament, he found time to write 13 books over a period of 12 years. His prodigious output is impressive. So is the infinite variety of his subjects.

The volumes under review bring together his writings published under different titles since he made his literary debut in 1992. The latest pieces in them are from a book that appeared in 2004.

On globalisation and communalism he writes with the conviction and commitment of a campaigner. He joined the globalisation debate quite early and has been drawing attention to the unseen strings in the new tariff and trade arrangements.

Some of the essays on the subject bear the name of P.A.Vasudevan as co-author. The campaign against communalism that he began in the wake of the demolition of the Babri Masjid continued with renewed vigour after the Gujarat riots. Social inequalities figure as a matter of deep concern in his writings. Personality features and travel accounts form a significant part of the essays in the two volumes.

He delves into the past and comes up with interesting accounts of makers of history.

Writers figure prominently in his scheme of things.

Together, the two volumes bear testimony to the author’s wide interests and his ability to gather and disseminate information about men and matters.
