MALAYALAM
Self-knowledge
C. L. RAMAKRISHNAN
SVEEYAJNANAM: Malayalam translation by T. Gopalan of the book “On Self-Knowledge” by J. Krishnamurti; DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 90.
THIS SLIM, handy volume comprises lectures delivered by J. Krishnamurti during 1947-49 rendered into Malayalam.
The lectures centre on Self-realisation or gaining knowledge about the essential nature of oneself which will give lasting bliss and awareness of the Ultimate Reality. As the Upanishads state, this is non-different from the state of realisation. The means for attaining this knowledge is stated as one’s own effort and striving. Scriptures and preceptors merely show the path. Vairagya is said to be the stepping stone. Conviction, practice and guidance are required to progress steadily on this path.
In addition to the translation, the publication also includes a few question-answer sessions following JK’s lectures. Though most of them are based on the lecture, some are directed towards JK’s personal experiences and predilections. The responses of the thinker to such questions are remarkable. For instance, to the question regarding achieving control over mind, his answer is “reaching a state of independence from thought.” T. Gopalan’s grasp of the subtle points while rendering them in clear and excellent Malayalam deserves to be commended.
