AMBIKA ANANTH
SEELAMA? ADI EMI? (Anthology of short stories): Anamakudu; Vahini Book Trust,1-9-286/3,Vidyanagar, Hyderabad-500044. Rs.100.
THESE STORIES seem characterised by a conscious selection of theme and fine narration. One finds an aesthetic discipline in the way the stories take shape. They are diverse in nature, yet one can classify them as “progressive”. Antiquity does not effect the narration when the writer adopts the language used by Vishwanatha Satyanarayana in the story “Seelama Adi Emi”. This story has a strong message to rape victims and their families. Why one should fight the social stigma by coming out openly and get the perpetrator of the crime punished is conveyed powerfully in the story. The exchange of dialogues between the male and female protagonists, Visalakshi and Vishwanatham, are penned wonderfully.
The story titled “Mee” is very poignant, despite being based on a common theme like death. How a son sees the life-journey of his father and contemplates on it forms the content. A very effective story.
The existential agony of some individuals, compromise of some individuals, weak and futile existence of some individuals, the clear-cut awareness of some – all these form the basis of the stories. “Anantham”, “O Agnaanam Lonchi”, “Yagnam”, and “Varnabedham” leave an ineffaceable impression.
