Sri Aurobindo once wondered how Adi Sankara wrote a commentary on the Isa Upanishad which preaches the path of action (Pravritti). This offbeat volume postulates that this is not odd, since the paths of Pravritti (Karma) and Nivritti (Jnana) are entwined. He quotes excerpts from the works of Swami Vivekananda, Kalidas, Karl Marx, T.S.Eliot besides Telugu poets like Tikkana, Srinatha and Sri Sri in support of his perspective.
This process of synthesis between Karma and Jnana initiated in the Isa Upanishad culminated in the Bhagavad Gita. Both the Isa (the smallest) and the Brihadaranyaka (the largest) Upanishads form part of Sukla Yajurveda.
This book discusses the 18 mantras in separate sections. Word-by-word translation of the Sanskrit verse followed by analysis, makes this commentary comprehensive.
The author explains that the concept of the global village exists in the Vedas, epics and the works of T.S. Eliot. In fact, the nomenclature “Isavasya” means the universe is bound by the mercy of God, where the entire mankind is happy.
