( Old No.55) Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs. 95.
THIS BOOK is a spiritual illumination taking the reader to various places of pilgrimage down south with the author acting as the guide. In the process, the wide chasm that lies between one’s wishes and one’s powers turns out to be a thing of the past. Balakumaran writes that the urge to visit holy shrines came when he was but 16 and that he owes his success as a writer to the steady faith he has developed over the years; how he could make rapid strides once his prayers were answered.
His observations on temples are based on an intensive study of the legendary, historic and the architecturally important ones. He also refers to the hymns of Naalvar who have sung in ecstasy and the feel of a vibrant atmosphere in some of these temples.
Ahobilam, Srisailam, Sankarankoil and Virupatcheeswarar Mylapore are among the interesting titles in this book. Starting with the one on free distribution of food to the poor, the book is enlivened by a series of articles of a different kind including one on the Arupathumoovar festival in Mylapore.
