MALAYALAM

Eternal winter

H. RAMAKRISHNAN

MATHANGI FARM: K. P. Unni; DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 85.

“SOMETIMES YOU have to lie to tell the truth”, a quote of Robert J. Flaherty is set as the appropriate prelude to this gripping novel. Mathangi Farm is an isolated locale — a remote, lonely island, totally detached from the world outside. It represents one of the many possibilities of existence. The farm and the lives therein have such depth and richness that cannot even be dreamt of.

The farm is a crucible of experiences of the populace – their utter helplessness and passionate hopes. Dinakar Prasanth, arrives there to carry out research on the social realm of human relations. He doubts if there is another place on the Earth where you can see similar traits and interactions, deceit and retribution.

He is aware that in the history of the world, you cannot find replication of tragedies or peculiarities. As for Anamika, she thinks that every misfortune of this Earth has been specially reserved for her. Hers is an eternal winter with no sign of spring!

The novel has an element of all the agonising aspects of life - satire and irony, suffering and misery.
