The Cauvery dispute
T. RAMAKRISHNAN
KAVERI ORU TULLAL ORU IRAICCHAL: Seshanarayana; Bhagyalakshmi Prakashana, 87, 3rd Cross, Singapura, Vidyaranyapura P.O., Bangalore-560097. Rs. 180.
THE CAUVERY dispute has engaged the attention of water experts, political leaders and other members of civil society in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for long.
It has eluded a lasting solution despite several attempts made in the past.
This book deals with the dispute and it essentially presents a perspective, as seen by the author, reflecting the position of Karnataka. It was originally written in Kannada five years ago when the dispute was at its worst phase in the recent years.
Several interesting data such as the chapter on the doyen of Indian engineering, M. Visveswarayya, form part of the book. Though the author appears to be earnest in expressing his desire for the early resolution of the dispute, he has not come up with any path-breaking proposal. Better attention could have been given to proof reading. Besides, there are some factual inaccuracies.
For example, he has stated that V.O. Chidambaram Pillai (1872-1936), a respected nationalist from Tuticorin and founder of the first indigenous enterprise, the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, was hanged by the British. He did not face the gallows.
