Poignant novel
H. RAMAKRISHNAN
GANDHARVAPATHANGALIL:
K. M. Radha; Mathrubhumi Books, MM Press, Cherooty Road, Kozhikode-1. Rs. 50.
THIS NOVEL brings out the sobs and snuffles of a turbulent feminine mind that is being thrashed by several swirls and whirls of life. Her heart had longed for harmonious music. Instead, it could generate only the discordant notes of disillusionment and regret. She had a yearning for a life full of love and care. And she was destined to be aloof in the gloomy loneliness of dark shadows. This is the poignant story of Aparna, who had to face the agony of the thorns of deceit and pretence.
Caught between Gregory Lawrence, a childhood companion on the one hand and Hareendran, her life-partner, she was in search of a panacea for the insoluble problems and predicaments that inhabit her nimble heart.
Within a month of having tied the knot with Hari, her father died. Fate had not allowed her to live with her father for even a year and a half after her mother passed away. Had her father been alive, Hari would not have dared to live with another woman.
Or, perhaps he would have led such a dual life in secrecy.
K. M. Radha’s slim, but dense volume follows a subtle and simple style in dealing with an essentially clear thesis.
This book weaves such an encompassing tapestry around the calm and tranquil atmosphere of the rubber estates that is stunning in its accomplishment.
