THIRUPPUGAL SUTCHUMAM: Mangadu Kannappa Manoharan; Mullai Nilayam, 9, Bharati Nagar First Street, T. Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs. 25.
THIS BOOK deals with the wisdom of music and Godhead in Tamil language in two sections.
Music is treated as the gateway to God. Tirujnana Sambandar and Arunagirinathar have rendered great service to Tamil literature by praising God through musical verses called Chandap-padalgal. The author discusses the various terms (Chanda) which are technical and states that the Chandas exhibit the musical and spiritual/mystical genius of Tirujnana Sambandhar and Arunagirinathar. Chanda means the beauty of music enshrined in the sound of the letters and terms, which are indicative of spirituality.
In the second section the author discusses the mystical, religious experiences in Tamil language. Tamil is not only musical but also spiritual. The spiritual and musical implications of Aum, the Pranava, are beautifully brought out by the author.
He explains “Saravanabhava” with special reference to the six sacred hills of Muruga – Palani, Palamudircolai, Swamimalai, Tirupparamkundram, Tiruchendur and Tiruttani. An excellent book.
