VIVARNAM — Collection of Stories: Chandralatha. Prabhava Publications, Nellore. For Copies- All branches of Vishalandra Book House, Navodaya Publishers, Vijayawada. Rs. 75 (paper back), Rs. 125 (Hardbound).
THIS WELL-chosen collection of six pithy stories represents the best of contemporary writing in Telugu short story genre. All the stories have appeared in popular magazines showcasing the versatility of the writer. They exhibit a good range of subject matter, expressed in a variety of techniques. Apart from excellent presentation adorned with appealing paintings, the content of the book is truly worthy.
All the stories have a palpable moral, yet coming only in a moderate and a suggestive way, not with a preaching tone. Their primary impulsion seems to be to reach out to the reader, in a fine narrative. “Vivarnam” deals with a theme which swings between the surreal to the ordinary moments of life. The writer delves deep into the psyche of her characters, though conditioned by her own sociological, emotional and intellectual understanding of the world around.
The stories “Akkada poosina puvvu” and “Vasthuvu” deserve special mention.
One finds a Western technical virtuosity in the craft of the story building, but with a distinct native finesse which placates the sensibility of discerning readers.
