KANNADA

Essence of Vedanta

V. GOPALAKRISHNA

VEDANTADA SAMAGRA SIDDANTHA: Vidwan U. Padmanabha Bhatt; IBH Prakashana, No.77, Rama Rao Layout, II Main, BSK 3rd Stage, Bangalore-560085. Rs. 375.

THIS BOOK is a condensed treatise on the essence of Vedanta philosophy based on the 10 principal Upanishads.

The commentator has selected 333 relevant Mantras out of the total 1453 for exposition of the important doctrines enunciated in them.

The author in the introductory note elucidates briefly the contents of the Upanishads highlighting their universal characteristic features. The illustrations given here establish that the Upanishads are against rituals but strongly favour Upasana.

The knowledge imparted in these texts does not belong to any particular community. The questions and doubts put forward by seekers of knowledge are applicable to the whole mankind. The Upanishads were revelations of the seers from their illumined experience. The answers convey true knowledge to achieve the aim of life.

The elucidation of the Mantras reveal the basis of the universe, how it was created and developed, the identity of Atman, life after death, the part played by food, breath, and the mind.

The author analyses them scientifically. Each of the selected Mantras is presented with summary followed by a detailed commentary in simple language.

A word index and an appendix indicating the beginning of Mantras arranged in Sanskrit alphabetical order are useful for reference.

The author deserves congratulations for providing an easy access to this ancient treasure trove.
