MALAYALAM
Allegorical novel
K. KUNHIKRISHNAN
URUPPA — Novel: A. M. Basheer; Mathrubhumi Books, MM Press, Cherootty Road, Kozhikode-673001. Rs. 80.
WHEN A location becomes the main character in fiction, it has ramifications galore and the narration becomes intricate. The writer has to carefully tread a path with a plethora of characters and hold the reader’s attention.
The novelist admirably succeeds in this.
The towering tree with its titular location in the Machad area of Thrissur district is huge and visible from afar. It allegorically links several things and divides people of various shades and communities, as well as villages and jungle. It has been standing witness to many a historical event. Some branches are strong with full bloom, while others are not so lucky. All these symbolise the poor people in the colony under the one-lakh housing scheme of the government.
There are people of various castes and communities. There are pangs of growth and development. There are petty robbers, gossip mongers, hardworking people eking out an honest living, and they indulge in emotional outbursts and calmness. Their lives are very closely knit as their physical proximity is with limited space. The children grow, and with development and maturity, love, passion and platitudes and emotional dilemmas also build up. But true and sublime love despite hindrances ultimately succeeds in the novel.
The narrative style is commendable and the novelist has commendably maintained the native spoken dialogues.
