MALAYALAM
Valmiki’s epic
C. L. Ramakrishnan
SRIMAD VALMIKI RAMAYANAM SUNDARA KANDAM — in Two Volumes: Panchangam Book Depot, P.B.No 4, Kunnamkulam, Thrissur. Rs. 300.
This publication in two substantially bound volumes is translation in Malayalam of the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana.
The translation has been done by V. Sankunnikuttan, K. I. Narayanan and K.A. Govindan. Ordinarily translators adopt the style of providing word-for-word translation followed by the meaning of the verse or at least the intent of the verse thereafter. As a departure from this procedure, this publication has three useful features.
The text of the epic is in Malayalam, the verses have been set out in prose order and the meaning makes a continuous narrative. There are explanatory notes below verses, wherever necessary, which enhance appreciation by bringing out the suggested meanings.
This work enables people who know only Malayalam to understand the original epic and also its import. The content of the verses in the original has been faithfully brought out in the translation, which employs a simple and flowing style.
Countless thanks and gratitude are due to T.R. Gopalakrishnan who has been the prime mover in this project and with great humility, he has made a submission of this work to them. The self-satisfaction he has derived is transparent in his dedicatory note. An excellent publication which adds to the literature on Valmiki’s epic.
