Social novel
C. G. RISHIKESH
VAIRANILA: Venganur Pugazhendi; Vijaya Pathippagam, 20 Raja Street, Coimbatore-641001. Rs. 90.
THIS IS a novel focusing on the social evil of the spread of AIDS through promiscuous sex and on the need for determined efforts to eradicate the deadly disease. Rajanilavan is on an excursion in a pleasure resort when the boat in which he and other picnickers are travelling meets with an accident. He uses a ploy to get out of the tricky situation and earns the gratitude of the passengers, among whom is Mayilazhagu.
He goes to Chennai where he takes up the noble profession of teaching after refusing to bribe recruiters for landing more lucrative jobs. There he rescues Sendoori, a woman sex worker, from the verge of death and learns that she attempted suicide because she was suffering from AIDS. He is even prepared to marry the fallen woman but the eternal triangle inevitably sets in with Mayilazhagu entering the scene. Incident happens upon incident before the knot is untied – or should we say the knot is tied.
Forceful arguments to create awareness against AIDS are given in the novel which speaks for an end to exploitation of women. Typos in references to English authors and titles may be taken for granted in Tamil publications.
