Spiritual classic

OLIVALAR TIRUPPUGAZH MADANI: A. Tanikaivelan; Arunagiri Pathippagam, Perambur Barracks, Chennai-600012. Rs. 75.
THE TITLE of this slim volume suggests that the classic Tiruppugazh by Arunagirinathar is an ornament that adorns the Lord’s chest (madani), thus implying that it is a proud one and to be imbibed internally.
True to this, the author has, in the 51 articles in this publication, given appropriate quotations from Tiruppugazh.
There are profuse cross references from the “Nalvar” and other eminent Tamil saints like Sekkizhar.
A lot of interesting episodes, new insights into certain words like kavadi, Kalahasti, Tirivayyar, the name of Madurai city and the streets around the temple, Sivakasi, Sikkal, the popular belief of Surapadma having been destroyed in Tiruchendur not being borne out by records, description of holy places and their importance find a place in this interesting work. Special mention may be made of the history of Kalahasti and the episode of Kannappa Nayanar, which greatly move the reader.
However, in the future edition attention may be given to correction of printing errors; some of the sentences must be made intelligible at the first reading, and more detailed description of the import of the symbol “Aum”, which is believed to have been expounded by Lord Muruga to Lord Siva.
