Colossus of music
H. RAMAKRISHNAN
SADGURU SRI SEMMANGUDISWAMY: Pala C. K. Ramachandran; Poorna Publications,TBS Building,G H Road, Kozhikode-673001. Rs.150.
A NADHAYOGI, a Nadopasaka, , a musical colossus, a veteran vocalist, an inspiring singer, a musicologist, an excellent rasika, a great teacher, a true Gandhian, a good orator, an eminent administrator and above all, a wonderful human being. That was Semmangudi. He had achieved the pinnacle of fame even when he was young.
The author was one of his foremost disciples and had the opportunity of being with him and accompanying him for over four decades. This book is a compilation of his Gurukulavasa, the support and encouragement he received, his life and experiences as told by the latter, and the many amazing and happy musical occasions during his association with his Guru.
Pala Ramachandran starts the narration from the very beginning — birth of Seenu, the ambience of the Semmangudi village, his tutelage under his cousin Semmangudi Narayanaswami and Sakharama Rao, and his Gurukulavasa with the giant Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, which gave Seenu a deep insight into Carnatic music, his marriage, his debut in the Ramanavami concert in Mysore, his life in Thiruvananthapuram, his contribution in the rediscovery and codification of Swathi Thirunal Krithis, his stint in the All India Radio and every other aspect of that full life.
He has also included several select photographs.
The author has so brilliantly chronicled the magnificent story of a great musical life that this book will long remain a valuable resource for rasikas, musicians and musicologists.
