TELUGU

In defence of rationalism

SAROJINI PREMCHAND

DEVUDI BHRAMALO: Richard Dawkins; Narisetti Innaih — Tr. in Telugu; Alakananda Prachuranalu, 59-6-15, Kanchukota Street, Vijayawada-520008. Rs. 200.

AUTHOR OF The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins, an eminent scientist with persuasive arguments and rigorous logic, dismantles the entire structure of God built over centuries by religions. His contention is that this is the root of all evil and it is this that has produced crusades, witch-hunts, suicide bombers, 9/11, 7/7, Partition and the bloodshed, Israel-Palestinian wars, Serb-Croat-Muslim massacres, persecution of Jews, conflict in northern Ireland and many such horrors. To those who say that God and holy books are necessary in order to keep man good and moralistic he presents highly illustrative expostulations. “If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.” In support of atheism he says, it indicates a healthy independence of mind. Dawkins’ explicit opinion is that a proper understanding of the magnificence of the real world can fill the inspirational role that religion has historically and inadequately usurped.

Inniah, actively involved with centre for enquiry, to promote rational thinking and scientific spirit deserves commendation for bringing out this translation. Those who wish to savour the slashing wit and compelling eloquence of Dawkins must go to the original.
