PANDITA PARAMESHWARA SHASTRI VEELUNAMA: Tripuraneni Gopichand; Alakananda Prachuranalu, 59-6-15, Kanchukota Street, Vijayawada-520008. Rs. 100.
GOPICHAND WAS a socially conscientious, courageous writer who shunned age-old conventions and traditions filled with hypocrisy and dogma. He wrote stories to educate and enrich the populace. This novel won the first Sahitya Akademi award for Telugu fiction. How narrow-minded thinking can blunt the sensitivity of men and how life will teach lessons is well conveyed in this story.
Parameshwara Shastry is a man caught in bigotry and regressive thought process but places himself on a high pedestal. How love and trust can get eroded under the influence of mud-slinging rumours and unfounded scandals spread by enemies masquerading as friends is shown in the twists and turns of the life of Sujatha, the wife of protagonist, Kesavamurthy, who is a well-established writer, a man with admirable qualities. His intentions will be read wrong by Parameshwara Shastry, whose past was a quagmire of sin and secrecy. How Sujatha’s birth secret is revealed and how Shastry comes around, how the much awaited contents of the “will” drafted by Shastry turn the tables forms the storyline. With his innovative technique Gopichand remains a role model for upcoming writers. A must read book.
