V. GOPALAKRISHNA
MUTTHINA JOLA: Thumbadi Ramaiah, Bodhishree Prakashana, Akkare, Nethaji Road, Water Tank East, Vidyanagar, Tumkur-572103. Rs.70.
THE AUTHOR in his 18 pen-pictures in this monograph recollects several events and experiences he had in his private life and official career. The characters described here have already peeped from the author’s autobiography published earlier, and therefore, these memoirs may be called a supplement to the former. The author in his foreword says that these characters had made an indelible impression on him.
Apart from his mother and close relatives the author makes several pictures of teachers, officers, and an ill-treated woman who approached him for grant of compensation, and so on.
There are some portrayals of events like his sister’s marriage, a story narrated by his uncle, the author’s experience of searching for a bride and the intimacy with his villagers. A minister teaching his officials a lesson about working sincerely not only highlights the code of conduct but gives a true picture of a devoted and committed politician.
Most of these characters hail from a rural or semi-urban background. The author sincerely and effectively brings out their cultural integrity.
The author gives a real picture of the love and affection prevailing in rural areas despite the poor living conditions and disparity in the quality of education.
A welcome addition to Dalit literature.
