THIS HANDY volume comprises 10 articles summarising the life and teachings of the Sage of Tiruvannamalai, Ramana Maharshi. His boyhood and confrontation with death, which was the turning point, have been graphically related by the author. It is well known that Ramana advocated the philosophy of Advaita. To discover the ultimate purpose of life, the sage exhorted the devotee to seek the answer to the question: “Who am I?” All transactions in the world relate to the psycho-physical organism but due to ignorance of one’s essential nature the individual considers himself as the agent. The author says that in the very presence of the sage, many aspirants have experienced an extraordinary peace, a mark of a Jivanmukta. The Arunachala hill is described as presenting an octagonal appearance, suggestive of the physical representation of Lord Siva, who is believed to have eight forms. The omission of certain words in the definition of “sanyasa” needs correction in the next edition. A good effort in bringing out the sage’s life and teachings.
