KANNADA

Unique literary genre

V. GOPALAKRISHNA

VACHANA HOMBALE: D. Lingaiah, Dinakara Prakashana, 690, 7th Block, II Phase, Banashankari 3rd Stage, Bangalore-560085. Rs. 180.

KANNADA VACHANA literature is known for its brevity, simplicity and magnanimity of Virasaiva precepts. Perhaps, this prose-poetry form of composition is the only genre that continues to exist in different literary stages through the ages in Kannada literature. The different stages like Navya, Navyottara, Dalita and Bandaya diligently used this literary style for their compositions; the only difference has been that the ancient writings were mainly based on the themes of Virasaiva canons, and the modern Vachanas on a variety of themes with a modern outlook.

The present anthology comprising 1025 modern vachanas are conveniently classified into 20 categories which include society, life, literature, culture, folklore and so on.

The author, known for his prolific Vachana writings gives succinct and simple illustrations. A valuable contribution to ethics.
