The world of crime
AMBIKA ANANTH
RATNAMBA MUTYAMBA — Novel: M.V. Sitapati Rao; Visalandhra Publishing House, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500001. Rs. 80.
THIS STORY presents an astonishing rite of passage of lives steeped in crime, horror and scheming plots. What strikes most a reader is the remarkable way in which the “triumph over evil” is conveyed with creative mellowness and maturity, though the theme is dark and haunting.
The story unfolds with the lives of two sisters, Ratnamba and Muthyamba, coming under the grip of the criminal world, filled with cutthroat people and cruelty. The horrible twists and turns, and unexpected events in their lives create empathy.
Ratnamba, the older of the two, faced childhood abuse which continues to shadow her life even in her adulthood. As a repercussion, her whole family along with her younger sister Muthyamba get caught in a network of crime, drugs and murder. How the sisters become instrumental in bringing to book the scheming criminal Janardhan is truly awe inspiring.
The police are usually made fun of in the tinsel world but in this novel one finds a duty-conscious and successful officer in Vijayavardhan and in police Sommana who dies doing his duty. They represent selfless courageous service police provide for the public.
The volte-face in the novel at the end is strikingly appealing. The fictional world in the story is very similar to the real world. A gripping mystery novel.
