THIS SUBSTANTIALLY bound volume in Tamil is a glossary of words appearing in ancient Indian epics, of characters, pilgrim centres, incidents, preceptors, code of conduct and rituals.
There are over 5,500 words given in alphabetical order, with their meanings. A great and arduous effort for which the author has to be congratulated.
While giving the meaning for the term “brahmahathi”, it is mentioned that it refers to the spirit that takes refuge in a realised soul. It is further explained that it torments the killer. Perhaps, there is jumbling of these ideas.
The word “brahmahathi” denotes killing one who is deeply immersed in the study of the Vedas. Indra incurred this sin but he got rid of it by distributing it to five entities. This fact may also be added.
In the next edition of this book, the contents page could include words starting with the letter “chu” to the word “thomiyar”. This would usefully serve as a reference book for those who come across these terms while studying the Puranas and the Itihasas.
