KANNADA

Social reformer

V. Gopalakrishna

BASAVA SIRI: Veerendra Simpi, Sri Channabasaveshwara Samsthan Hiremath, Harkud -585 437, Taluq Basavakalyan, Dist. Bidar, Rs. 50.

BASAVANNA’S OUTSTANDING contribution to humanity as a social reformer, saint-philosopher and poet has been well acknowledged in writings through the ages. His endless efforts in establishing peace, justice, equality and individual freedom made him a divinity during his lifetime.

This book is a brief study to highlight the ideals and the achievements of Basavanna.

The author briefly sketches the personality of Basavanna emphasising the extraordinary influence he made during his time. The eradication of caste and class was a bold attempt and he was very practical in his approach.

Severing himself first from traditional bondage, superstitions and meaningless rituals Basavanna began to teach his ideals through his Vachanas.

The author gives a comparison with the ten commandments of Jesus Christ where the messages given by both the religious leaders are quite relevant and coincide.

Basavanna gave importance to Kayaka, worship of work.

He said that doing work is a higher stage of divine life; good conduct is heaven. He called charity “dasoha”. According to him a ruler should treat his subjects as his own masters and women should be given freedom.

Good conduct should be respected with no bar of caste or class. The author analyses the dictums with relevant vachanas.
