SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA SANKARA BHASHYAM: Swami Tanmayananda; Ramakrishna Sarada Sangam, Kuala Lumpur. Copies can be had from Ramakrishna Math and Mission Book Stalls. Rs. 200.
THIS PUBLICATION is a Tamil translation of the commentary of Sankara on the Bhagavad Gita. The methodology followed in this publication is: the original text in Sanskrit, transliteration in Tamil, meaning of the verse, word-to-word meaning and the comments of Sankara.
The Bhagavad Gita describes Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga and Jnana yoga, and it might give rise to an understanding that all these three independently are instruments for liberation. Sankara establishes through his commentary that they are only steps in the spiritual seeker’s progress.
The central point in this scripture is attaining purity of mind, proceeding towards both mental steadiness and concentration (bhakti yoga) and then to realisation of the essential nature of oneself (jnana yoga). The Gita has been expounded from the Advaita standpoint through this commentary. The translation in Tamil, which is readable and intelligible, will enable a wider section of people to follow the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. The effort is praiseworthy.
