Wisdom through tales
AMBIKA ANANTH
LENI PUSTAKAM — by Sudha Murthy: Dwaraka — Tr. in Telugu; Alakananda Prachuranalu, 59-6-15, Kanchu Kota Veedhi, Vijayawada-8. Rs. 125.
THIS BOOK with simple stories teaches essential wisdom which makes a child understand what is wrong and what is right, what is good and what is bad, what can be termed as immoral and dishonest thinking, and how important it is to be philanthropic.
Sudha Murthy, who herself set an example of good living and wholehearted participation in society to help others, is the right person to write these stories.
The stories with a gentle, simple image draw a much bigger picture. They lead the readers into a fictitious world to offer a view into the real world of people’s lives.
The important feature of children’s literature should be that the author should find the right tone: not throttling the content with too much sentiment and emotion, but must allow it to breathe, should not ram the point home like a preacher or a politician, and make it sound pleasantly agreeable. That’s what the author does effectively. The translation reads well and is smooth giving it the flavour and feel of the original.
The story “Nijame kaani” proves that what we see may not be the entire truth, “Vishwasam” shows that compassion and love always win and jealousy fails. There are stories too with myth intertwined to create more impact.
