TELUGU

Translation work

M. NARASIMHACHARY

SREE VAGVAIBHAVAMU: Telugu rendering of Nammazhvar’s Thiruvaymozhi by P.Uma; Pub. by the translator, 9/16, 4th Street, Lakshmi Nagar, Nanganallur, Chennai-600061. Rs. 300.

THE GREAT mystic saint Nammazhvar was an apostle of Lord Vishnu sent by Him to this world to turn the material-minded people towards spirituality. His Tiruvaymozhi (translated in Telugu as Sreevak) is the most eloquent and efficient testimony of the grand spiritual legacy bequeathed by the mystic saint, to posterity. It contains the essence of the Chandogya Upanishad, which belongs to the Sama Veda.

Several commentaries, expositions, explanations and studies have already appeared on the Tiruvaymozhi in almost all languages.

The present translator, P. Uma, has rendered a great service to Srivaishnavism by translating the first 10 decades of Tiruvaymozhi, into simple Telugu. She has chosen the easy flowing “Dvipada” and “Sisa” metres for this purpose. The Dvipada first gives the essence of the song and the Sisa verse that follows explains the meaning. Then a brief exposition of the meaning in prose follows. The aim of the translator is to enable the Telugu reading public to enjoy the bliss of Nammazhvar’s composition. She has succeeded in her efforts admirably well. Uma is equally at home in Telugu and Tamil literatures. She deserves our hearty congratulations on this useful, devotional publication.
