ILAMAIYE INIMAI:Seshadrinatha Sastrigal; Vikatan Publications, 757, Anna Salai, Chennai-600002. Rs. 55.
THIS PUBLICATION comprises 33 brief articles on different topics, written in simple, flowing Tamil, containing valuable information for the youth to program their own self-development strategies by adhering to right conduct. What is praiseworthy is that the learned author has drawn copiously from the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana, the Mahabharata and noted poets like Kalidasa and Bhartruhari.
A number of pithy Tamil sayings in vogue have been interspersed to support the concepts quoted from sacred lore. The word “experience”, usually associated with elderly people, is explained interestingly as nothing acquired due to age, but the imprints of youth. This is how the author justifies that the best period in one’s life is one’s youth, neither childhood nor old age. It is an undisputed fact that only in youth achievements are possible, as the period prior to and after, lack physical and mental strength. The confrontation between Rama and Parasurama is generally understood as a challenge to the former, on hearing the news that Rama had broken Siva’s bow.
The author gives several reasons, revealing the real purpose of this episode. The word “Adrshta” (unseen) is well explained and totally fits in with the Karma theory, the only logical explanation that can be provided for happenings in this world. In a couple of places, clarification may be necessary, as for instance, “purification” of Sita through fire and the contents of Uttara Rama Carita by Bhavabhuti.
