AMBIKA ANANTH
ANANTHAM: Singamaneni Narayana; Visalandra Book House, 4-1-435, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500002. Rs. 40.
SINGAMANENI’S STORIES are easily readable, yet serious, and with a subtext of wise utterances which come with social consciousness and intensity of Marxist philosophy. “Anantham” is the most important story of this collection which gives a true picture of the decadent village life, people living on subsistence economy and dying in deep-rooted feuds. How a brother goes to his native village to find it divided into pieces by the power play of two warring groups, how he also finds his siblings and others in the grip of anarchy, violence and death is beautifully depicted. This open-ended story doesn’t leave much for imagination; it is all said very clearly.
The author is critical of globalisation and the way it has affected the lives of those who depend on debts and get sucked into the mire of helplessness and despair. “Taragati gadilo Talli” and “Viramaneeyam”, which show the importance of a caring conscientious teacher and how hypocritical some school events are, have been portrayed very simply yet with great impact.
