BHARATHI 125 AYVUK KALANJIYAM: Ed. by A.Arivunambi & K.Ravi; Varshan Pirasuram; 23/64, Rameswaram Street, T.Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs.600.
THIS COLLECTION of papers is the outcome of the international seminar on Bharathi held by the department of Tamil Studies of the Pondicherry University and the Vanavil Panpaattu Maiyam during Bharathi’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations. The volume consists of 130 papers. Participants included not only Tamil scholars but also Bharathi admirers. Some of the themes such as feminism, spiritualism, nationalism, science and education have drawn the attention of many scholars and therefore two or three authors have papers on the same theme. But every paper has its distinct identity in view of its style, approach, aim and presentation.
Most of the papers in this collection deal with novel themes that are relevant to the present context. The issues chosen for study are freely dealt with, and are fairly full length. The editors should be congratulated for not prescribing any restriction.
All the papers are neatly edited and the anthology well brought out. Bharathi’s works need a multi-disciplinary approach. It is heartening to note that the present volume fulfils the long felt requirement in a reasonable way. The present volume is a remarkable attempt on Bharathi and is a welcome addition to the field of modern Tamil studies. The editors must be congratulated for accomplishing this novel venture.
