Self-enquiry

ENNAMVASAPPADUM: Translation by Sivasankari and Lalitha Venkatesh of the lectures by Swami Suddhananda, Vanathi Pathippakam, 23 Deenadayalu Street, T.Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs.60.
THIS TRANSLATION of four lectures delivered by Swami Suddhananda is on the technique of controlling the mind and solving the problem of ego, and that self-help is the best help in these areas. He very rightly points out that it is futile to fault outside factors as the source of mental turbulence, since in all activities, the prime mover is one’s own mind. As the Bhagavad-Gita advocates, it is only a firm resolve and unremitting practice that would enable control of thoughts. The problems arise because one identifies himself with what he has and not what he is.
Difficult concepts in this enquiry are explained through citations from scriptures. The Yoga Vasishta emphasises that it is not possible to change others or the world. The right course will be to change and orient oneself to the correct perspective. There is a need to realise the essential nature of the “I”, as all activities are related to the “I”.
The lectures are in conversational style with illustrative examples. A thought-provoking book, deceptively small in size.
