MALAYALAM

Art appreciation

H. RAMAKRISHNAN

KATHAKALI RASAYANAM: Akavoor Narayanan; Mathrubhumi Books, Cherootty Road, Kozhikode-673001. Rs. 50.

IN AYURVEDA, Rasayanam is a medicinal paste that gives a refreshing vigour. The title aptly suggests that Kathakali is akin to that.

The core essence of this art form is the emotions that it excites. This book deals with the emotional vibrations that are kindled within the minds of the audience.

Akavoor Narayanan at the outset claims that he has not practised any art form. His only credentials are that he has acquired knowledge through years of observation. Instead of putting him at a disadvantage, this has endowed him with total impartiality and objectivity.

This slim volume contains the possible responses of a zealous admirer of the art. Every observation that the author has made comes from an artistic heart.

The author has succeeded in bringing out the charm and captivating enchantment of this art form, its emotional appeal and the transformation it has undergone through time.

The volume also provides a lengthy and informative interview with the author.

There is no doubt that this book will be a happy experience to those who enjoy Kathakali and also to those who aspire to do so.
