KADAPA KATHA — A Collection of Short Stories by Kadapa District Writers: Pub. by A Rajendra Prasad, Nandaluru Katha Nilayam, Visalandhra Publishing House, 4-1-435, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500001. Rs. 200.
THE TITLE of the book itself can cause quite a stir. Powerful thoughts streaming through many minds form the tangible thread running through these fine stories. Most of them have people who face life as it comes, or as it is thrust upon them. Some stories give voice to the darkness existing in some lives, some draw pictures of the chaotic human conditions in a factional world, some resonate with human angst and helplessness in general. The opening story “Neelaveni” is truly remarkable in its theme and technique.
The dialogue between the writer and his lady protagonist is very interesting taking the story ahead away from the writer in the direction chosen by his character. Another remarkable story is “Mathaatheetam” which depicts the communal violence in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition, but it ends with the triumph of universal love and brotherhood. Stories such as Koolina Buruzu, Manishi Pasuvu and Alikidi deserve special mention.
This collection is a noteworthy attempt which makes readers see life through a compassionate blend of hope and trust despite the lopsidedness of the world. The article by Ketu Vishwanatha Reddy on the trends in Kadapa fiction adds value to the book.
