THIS COMPENDIUM of biographical sketches of 75 women writers of Kannada presents an ocean of information about their life and creative works. The author has arranged them in a chronological order commencing with Shanthabai Nilagara, the first novelist in the last quarter of the 19th century, internationally well-known writers besides some famous writers who are settled outside their home state.
The author besides their biographical details outlines their works highlighting their salient features thus providing an exact picture of the contemporary writings. The author’s sincere effort in the collection of information from various sources is praiseworthy.
It is also noteworthy that the biographer has succeeded in her attempt to get a lot of fresh information about some writers as well as identifying a few not-so-popular writers.
G. Venkatasubbaiah in his foreword rightly points out the need for inclusion of profiles of outstanding women scholars other than the creative writers in a book of this kind. Indeed a valuable contribution.
